Regarding Commenting, Courtesy and Trolling
Direct from the original RS, Metafrantic's post:

Since it's inevitable that this will come up again, I'm going to nip it in the bud right now.

As we have rules for language and sexual content on the discussion boards, we also have rules regarding civil behavior towards other board members. One rule, acutally, and it's very simple:

This includes individual insults as well as broadsweeping insults directed at the boards in general or a group of people on the boards.

This includes name-calling, derogatory comments, and condescensing digs.

This includes slander (or libel, as the case may be) based on expected or unproven behavior. HISTORY IS HISTORY. If a person is on the boards then they have the right to be there unless they do something new to warrant removal. Dredging up past behavior serves no purpose. Remember, "Mere accumulation of observational data is not proof." - in other words, just because something happened one way once does not automatically mean it will happen that way again. (This does NOT mean that the past cannot be discussed - just do it factually rather than slanderously.)

Discussion is wonderful. Discussion is the entire point of these boards. But a hostile environment where people fear to post because of the insulting responses they know they'll encounter defeats the purpose. BE NICE. This is not hard. If it is hard for you, you probably shouldn't be on a public forum in the first place.

You have been warned. There will be no further warnings: Violators of this rule will be banned. I do not care what your "prior record" is, I do not care how long you have been on the boards. This rule applies to everyone, not just the people you disagree with or don't like.

We forgot about this what with everything else we've been doing.
